The elaborate network of stockades, fortifications, and coast artillery that once lined American shores has never had much attention from academics. This study will help fill the gap. It focuses mostly upon the strategic Hampton Roads' area, using it as a case study for a broader discussion of U.S Army engineers and national defense policies. Clary's treatment is straightforward and uncontroversial, often pedantic in tone. A book of this nature demands adequate maps and explanatory drawings, but unfortunately, few are included. Its bibliography is excellent, however, and the book makes a good reference source. For university and large public collections.
