Devotion to Our Lady of Light was introduced to New Spain by the Jesuits in the 18th c. In the early 1700s, Mary appeared miraculously to an Italian nun requesting a new painting be made that portrayed her saving sinners from hell. Mary, Jesus, the Archangel Michael, and an angel all hold hearts, representative of the souls saved by Mary as well as Jesus’s eternal love. The basket of hearts likely also referenced Aztec sacrificial containers, an example of the syncretism of European and Indigenous religious beliefs in Spanish America.
En el siglo XVIII los jesuitas introducen en Nueva España la devoción a la Virgen de la Luz. A principios del 1700 la Virgen María se le aparece milagrosamente a una monja italiana y le solicita una pintura que la muestre rescatando a los pecadores del infierno. La obra que aquí mostramos presenta a María, Jesús, san Miguel arcángel y a un ángel sosteniendo los corazones de las almas salvadas gracias al amor infinito de Jesús y María. La cesta con corazones posiblemente haría referencia a los recipientes donde los aztecas colocaban los corazones de los sacrificados, un ejemplo del sincretismo de creencias religiosas entre europeos e indígenas en Hispanoamérica.Dimensions
