Dear Sir,
I regret very much the occasion to write of the death in action of your son, 145820 pte [abbreviated: private] S.I. [abbreviated: Sefton Inglis] Stewart with this battalion. He was a good soldier and fell fighting bravely in the advance of Aug 8th. [abbreviation: August 8, 1918]. He could not have done more nobly and we all have your pride and sympathise with you in this loss. He is buried with his comrades near where he fell. May the giving of these our best lads in the good [illegible: providence] of God bring us nearer to a better peace than we have known.
Faithfully Yours
E.E. Graham
