"Green Trees" Gift, Guest House on No. 8 Highway - 1 Mile West of GrimsbyDescription
This gracious heritage house at 332 Main Street West, built c 1860, was once the home of Andrew Hamilton Pettit and his wife Sarah.
During the 1940s, when under the ownership of Lieutenant Colonel A.J.C. Taylor and his wife Marion, “Green Trees” briefly operated as a Gift and Guest House. At its opening in 1946, it advertised “tastefully decorated” rooms and air conditioning. One end of the front veranda was closed off for the gift shop that carried Canadian handicrafts. A list of American and Canadian guests was regularly published in the Grimsby Independent and the Globe and Mail. After 3 1/2 years of operation, the house returned to a private residence.Collection
