Interior of Temple at Grimsby Beach.
The Temple was a circular building reputed to seat 7,000, although likely it was less. It had a distinctive “beehive” domed roof 30 meters high. Initially it had openings around the circumference but these were later closed in. The Temple was built in 1888 by the Methodist Camp Ground Company to accommodate the large numbers of people who came to hear stirring sermons by visiting preachers from all over Canada and the United States. Other well-known speakers came to give enriching spiritual and educational talks. Later, when the park became a place of amusement, the Temple became “The Auditorium” and was used for plays, vaudeville shows, comedians, and music concerts. It even had a theatre stock company.Collection
