By The Lake Motel began with Mrs. Alice Hand, who started the business by buying two cottages from the Old English Inn (the Red Dragon) on Main Street East. At the time, her husband (Edward Hand) and his family were in the fishing industry, which was experiencing declining profits due to pollution and invasive lamprey eels. The cottages at Hands' Beach soon became a popular stop for tourists coming from New York State. The Hands would eventually acquire 26 cottages and a snack bar. The business continued to thrive until a fire destroyed the buildings in 1965.Collection
