Roxy Theatre in 1973Entry/Object ID
901-59Description
The Roxy Theatre, located at 27 Main Street East was as grand as any big city theatre, with plush seats, heavy red curtains and a large screen.
It began in 1914 as Moore's Theatre, built by Albert Moore. After Moore's death, his wife Bessie ran the theatre for many years. When she sold it in 1944, it was renamed the Roxy Theatre by new owner Lionel Lester.
In 1973 John Delhez was both the owner and projectionist. He was assisted by his wife who sold tickets in the lobby and their daughter who worked behind the candy counter. In the early 1980s, attendance steadily decreased causing the theatre to close. The building became the home to live theatre performances by the Old Jersey Theatre Group. The building was vacant from 1988-1997and was demolished in 1997.Collection
