Public School Grimsby, OntDescription
Grimsby Public School, built on Livingston Avenue in 1906.
The Central Public School replaced a previous school, a log cabin located on the corner of Elm and Oak Street, in 1867. In its first year, it was an all boys school; girls began to be admitted in 1868. The school originally consisted of two rooms, which was englargened to three in 1879. Due to Grimsby's growing popularity in the early 1900s, the Central Public School was given a new six roomed school building on the north side of Livingston Avenue in 1906. This new building mostly served older students.
The school began to struggle with its growing number of older students. In response, a three storey high school was built in 1910; it stood besides the pre-existing Central Public School building. The Grimsby Secondary School on Boulton Ave. was built in 1925, which funnelled older students away from Central Public School. Due to dwindling numbers, the Central High School building was incorporated into the Central Public School.Collection
