The Village Depot, after 1979, in the former GTR / CNR railway station. Built by GTR in 1902, this building replaced a station built in 1900, which burned in 1902. When built, the station reflected the importance of Grimsby as a shipping depot. Architecturally the building was flamboyant for the GTR, the unequal towers had denoted the passenger waiting room and ticket office in the long, decorated board and batten design. After it's active role as a GTR then CNR depot, adjacent freight sheds and sidings were removed, making the the yard into a through-line, diminishing its historic role as a busy depot, but the station remained viable and familiar in the commercial life of the town. In 1976 the CNR leased the building privately and it was redeveloped as a commercial tourism initiative. The Village Depot opened May 1977 and functioned as a combined bar restaurant. The building was destroyed by fire on Dec 31, 1994. For a time a limited vestibule was available to shelter passengers riding the four daily VIA trains.Collection
