It was December 1942 when two well-known men in the community - Dr JH MacMillan and Alexander Globe had a conversation on the post office steps and decided the town needed a hospital.
They worked with CJ Eames - the owner of the Deer Park Golf Club property - to transition the clubhouse into a hospital.
After a few years of fund raising, hard work and renovations the 18 bed hospital opened January 7, 1946.
In the first month the hospital treated 47 patients and in the first year there were 170 babies born in West Lincoln - 85 boys and 85 girls!
For his efforts and enthusiasm, Alexander Globe was given the Lions Club Good Citizenship Award for 1945. Sandy Globe grew up in New Brunswick, was a mining engineer in Northern Ontario and later came to Grimsby with his family in the late 1920s. The Globe home was the brick house at 282 Main Street West, and the fruit farm stretched from the escarpment to the railway tracks.
The hospital burned down January 24, 1948.Category
