Town BellDescription
The bell was acquired from the Troy Bell Foundry, Troy, NY in 1883 by Town Council for the Fire Department at a cost of $337.95, plus installation.
It was placed on the roof of the higest building in the village - the Grout Agricultural Works Factory at the corner of Oak and Main St. east. For 75 years it summoned firemen, signified work and curfew hours, rang in the new year, honoured special events and people, and announced the end of WWI and WWII.
The former Grout Factory was demolished in 1958 and the bell was placed in storage. In 1966, it was restored by the Grimsby Historical Society to commemorate Canada's Centennial year. It was placed on a cairn in the Town square in front of the then Municipal building, now the front lawn of the Grimsby Museum at 6 Murray Street.Collection
