1920 Aeroplane View Of GrimsbyDescription
Looking south west along Main Street business district with Oak on the far left and Depot Street in the foreground. Mountain Street buildings and the Village Inn on the far left.
Of note on the north side of Main St.,L to R - the Post Office with its clock tower that faced east, west and down Depot St.
The gap in the buildings with the barn set well back was the early Ford dealer and service garage in the barn with gas pumps out at the street.
A few doors west, the building with the awnings, was A.F. Hawke store, later Steadman's. The Masonic building was next. West of the Masonic building was a public park, there until a liquor store was built on it on the 1960s.
On the north side of Main Street - from the left. The Chinese laundry building alongside the fire station. The hose drying tower is visible at the rear of the fire station. Most of the buildings fronting the street are as today. Towards the far left the Malakoff building rises above all; this was before the upper stories were removed in the 1930s.
On the west side of Depot St near the right border is the Jarvis home with the bakery and barn at the rear. The church parsonage is in the lower corner alongside the "4" on the border.
Most of the remaining barns and ancilliary buildings behind the main businesses on Main St were torn down in the 1970s to put public parking in place on the north and south side of the street.Collection
