Niagara Packers On Depot

Name/Title

Niagara Packers On Depot

Description

Exterior photo of Niagara Packers building on Depot street. A group of growers from Grimsby and Beamsville formed Niagara Packers and took over a fruit shipping plant that was located on Livingston Avenue. The building was erected by the Canadian government in 1914 and was an experimental pre-cooling plant. By pre-cooling the warm fruits before placing them in refrigerator cars, the fruit remained in better condition, even for closer deliveries. In 1932, the Town sold the arena to Niagara Packers. The building was used in the summer for fruit storage, and as a skating rink in the winter. When the pre-cooling facility burnt down in April 1949, the Niagara Packers moved their operations to the old 1855 railway station on Ontario Street. The business gradually changed to sales of farming products and continued to operate until the 1980s.
