Lake View House

Description

The Lake View House, built in 1883, was located within the Methodist Camp Grounds overlooking the lake at what is today the north west side of Betts Avenue. Lake View House became the centre of the social life of Grimsby Park. The Park's Lake View House and the Park House hotels were expertly managed by J.D Strawn of Buffalo, who resided at the Park full time in the summer season. A stay at the Lake View House was $1.50 to $2 per night, slightly more than a stay at the Park House. When constructed, it was considered one of finest and most complete summer hotels on the continent. Both hotels had stable accommodation for those who arrived by carriage or horse. A later advert notes the Lake View House was "...enlarged and re-furnished in order to meet the demand for increased accommodation" (Greetings From Grimsby Park pg.30). The Lake View became the property of Canada Steamship lines when it acquired Grimsby Beach in 1914. CSL upgraded the hotel and renamed it Grimsby Beach Inn. The facility was destroyed in a fire on July 1,1918 and CSL decided they would not rebuild the hotel. The Grimsby Beach Owners community acquired the property and put tennis courts and lawn bowling greens on the lot.
