The Red Dragon Inn

Description

The Red Dragon Inn was built by the English Inns Limited Company, which was established by Burlington businessmen in 1929. They set up three thatched-style inns around Ontario. There was the Pig and Whistle in Burlington, the Black Horse near Niagara Falls and the Red Dragon in Grimsby. Despite their popularity, the Inns did not survive the Great Depression, all three buildings were sold off. By 1931, the Red Dragon was renamed The Virginian. In the coming years, it changed hands and names various times. In the late 40s it was The Caribou and became popular with local teens. In the 50s, it was owned by boxer Omar Sicard who dubbed the building the Golden Gloves. Sicard sold the Golden Gloves in 1963, where it briefly became known as the Hare and Hounds. In its final form, the establishment was an antique shop called Knudstrups Stained Glass Studio. The antique shop was demolished in 2005, despite disapproval from the Grimsby Heritage Advisory Committee
