Profile extracted from - Lives Lived © Wayne Mullins 2022: A Grimsby WW1 volunteer soldier - buried in France. Hedley Charles Allez was born 1893 in The Bailiwick of Guernsey. He left his family behind and immigrated to Canada in 1911 with intentions to become a farmer in Russell, Manitoba. While he later identified as a machinist, his name first occurred in local records in the Grimsby Independent in May 1914 when he ran an ad selling milk and cream as the proprietor of Grimsby Dairy. He subsequently worked in the dairy business for his father-in-law, John Lawson, Reeve of Grimsby, and owner of Lawson's Diary. The diary business operated from the top of Grimsby Mountain at 114 Mountain St, the Lawson farm and home. In November 1915 he married Gertrude Lawson in St Catharines where they planned to reside, however by early 1916 they were living in Hamilton. Charles enlisted with the 98th Battalion in 1916 as a Private and was posted overseas shortly after, leaving behind his pregnant wife. While serving with the 19th Battalion, he suffered severe gunshot wounds during the Armiens offensive. He died of his wounds Sept 4, 1918 at Rouen, France, age 25. His widow Gertrude remarried in 1920 to Percy Shelton. They raised John H Allez {Jack} as their son. They lived at 32 Oak St for a time in the home that had been moved from Main St to Oak and after WW2 on Main Street over Baker's Store. Jack became a member of the Grimsby Fire Department and enlisted and served in the RCAF at Mount Hope in WW 2. In 1943 Sgt. Jack Allez married Hyla Hawes. They took up residence at 54 Robinson Street South and later at 21 Main St. East Their son, born in October 1944 was named John Hedley Allez, commemorating his grandfather; he was also called Lawson. In 1947 Jack Allez was one of the fire fighters who fought the blaze that almost destroyed the Village Inn. Gertrude is buried at Queen's Lawn Cemetary as Gertrude Irene Shelton. (1897-1991) Jack, Hyla and other Allez family members are also interred at Queen's Lawn. Additional information on Hedley C.
