Grimsby Beach entrance Gates

Description

The Park Gates, at the corner of Park Road North and Phelps Avenue were built in honour of a Royal Visit by King George VI and Queen Elizabeth in May 1939. The stone pillars were lined with roses. The archway was removed in 1951 to allow George Fair's cottage to be relocated from Grand Ave to Park Road North. The archway was never reinstalled however the stone pillars remain. The lower pillars were made of beach stone, with wooden pillars on top. On the righthand stone pillar is a plague which reads, " In commemoration of the Visit to Canada of King George and Queen Elizabeth, 1939". The gates were constructed with funds raised by the Grimsby Beach Cottager's Association. "A Private Residents Park" was added several years later. It caused some controversy but Canada Steamship Lines and the private cottage owners association were intent on showing it was not a public park, it was privately owned and managed. These are not at the same location as the origonal entrance gates were to the Methodist camp ground near the Grimsby Park train station.
