Grimsby Fruit Growers Canning plantDescription
The Grimsby Fruit Growers plant was located on Livingston Avenue and packed local fruits, both frozen and fresh. It was the second oldest plant in Grimsby and was originally owned by Mr. Bell. It was sold to Canadian Canners Limited in 1923. In 1949, the plant featured in a tv show that talked about the Niagara Pear Industries. A new warehouse was built in 1955.
Canadian Canners Plant, which operated under a number of ownerships before it closed in 1953. It processed peaches, pears, plums, tomatoes, beets and fruit pulp for jam. The plant was often called Todd's because for fifty years, from 1903-1953, it was managed by a member of the Todd family. According to Bruce Todd, the plant's location at the top of a 30 foot hill encouraged staff for generations to dump peach pits and ash from the coal-fired boiler over the edge.
After the plant closed, Ontario Housing Corporation built a seniors apartment there, however needed to deal with 18 feet of peach pits first!
In June 1960, the old plant on Livingston Avenue was demolished to make way for Grimsby's first shopping plaza - Grimsby Square Shopping Centre at 44 Livingston Ave.Category
