Aeroplane View Of Grimsby BeachDescription
Large white house at the top of the postcard is on Baker Road
By the 1920s Grimsby Beach was a popular amusement park owned and operated by the Canada Steamship Lines. It had originated in 1875 as a Methodist summer camp called Grimsby Park. Many features from this earlier period can be seen in this photo. The long pier extending into the lake was used by large steamers transporting thousands of visitors to the park every day. The low building near the pier was the new fruit storage shipping shed built by CSL for the steamer fruit shipping business they had just started to promote. Further back is the distinctive dome of the Temple which by the 1920s was in a bad state of repair and soon demolished. The white rectangle on the right was where the Lake View House stood before it burned down in 1918.
On the bottom of the left hand side you'll notice the casino dance hall starting to be built at the foot of Park Road.Collection
