Grand Trunk Railway Station - Grimsby Beach
The Grimsby Methodist Camp Ground had become the "Grimsby Park Chautauqua,
Canada’s Greatest Assembly”, a prominent destination by 1875. The park directors made arrangements for the park gates area to be a Grand Trunk Railway flag stop for passenger drop off and pick up. A rudimentary stop initially, there was no platform or station for shelter or ticket purchases; the conductor handled tickets once the passengers had boarded the train.
By 1884, a long covered railway platform and a station were built to provide better handling of crowds of up to 16,000 + per day arriving at the park. This platform was significantly larger than the station at Grimsby Village.
In the fore ground of the photo the slatted walkway across the tracks was the path to the HG&B streetcar station to the left at the foot of Park Road North, out frame of the photograph.Collection
