Description

The Grand Trunk Railway siding fruit loading platform on the north side of the railway yard, west side of Ontario St. On Nov 7, 1854 the Great Western Railway's route opened between Hamilton and Niagara. The main line was a single track. All steam engines took on water from the 30'x20' deep wooden reservoir that was raised 20' off the ground in Grimsby. As the service matured, mail and light express service increased with trains stopping at Grimsby 5X each day - both ways. Mail often reached its destination the next day. In 1880, 70,000 baskets of peaches were shipped from the Grimsby Station, Grimsby Beach station, Beamsville and Jordan. The commercilization of the fruit business was beginning. In 1882 Great Western Railroad shareholders voted to amalgamate with the Grand Trunk system, and it was approved by Parliament in 1884.
