Midway Looking South, Grimsby BeachEntry/Object ID
P2000-01-13-21Description
This view shows Grand Avenue leading into the park, with the original entrance gate in the distance. The midway covered a large area on both sides of Grand Avenue. Along with the picnic grounds and playing fields, it took up the southern half of the park.
The midway originated with H. H. Wiley of Cleveland who bought Grimsby Park from the Methodist Camp Ground Company in 1909 and turned the whole area into a popular amusement destination.
Through the years, the midway offered a variety of attractions: a roller-coaster, merry-go-round, carousel, shooting gallery, fish pond, pony rides, swings, fortune tellers, a tank with a python and another tank with a very ugly octopus and even a circulating library. There were ice cream and photo booths, a covered dance pavilion, and rides in a hot air balloon. For a while here was a little train that took children around the park.Collection
