In the 1920s Arthur Burland purchased a large portion of land (between 10-16 acres) on the Old Highway #8 , between Grimsby and Beamsville, and opened a campground for tourists.
The plan was to offer free camping among the trees. It included a main building, with stone chimneys and pillars, housing a dining room and rest rooms, and an outdoor dance platform and a reading area.
He built 12 cottages up in huge maple trees and also rustic cabins. Each cottage was 8'x10' and full furnished, including electricity!
In the campgrounds second year, the camp expanded with large circular seats built around the base of trees and rustic tables and chairs spread throughout the property.
While the establishment was officially called Maplewood Camps, everyone referred to the cottages as Honeymoon Huts.
Maplewood Camp closed in 1934 after the deaths of Arthur and Mary Burland.
