Description

The Hand family owned the lake front land at the foot of Maple Ave. where they allowed the public to access their beach in the 1930s. By The Lake Motel began with Mrs. Alice Hand, who started the business by buying two cabins from the Old English Inn (the Red Dragon) on Main Street East, to be placed in a court at their lake side property. At the time, her husband (Edward Hand) and his family were in the fishing industry, which was experiencing a decline due to pollution and invasive lamprey eels. The cabins soon became a popular stop for tourists coming from New York State. The Hands would eventually operate a marina, beach, 26 tourist cabins and a store. Edward Hand Sr died in 1961 but the business continued to operate until a fire destroyed the cabins in 1965.
