Description

Levine’s! - The Smartest Small Town Department Store in Ontario! Sammy Levine started operating Levine’s in Grimsby in 1921 at 8 Main Street West, advertising Dry Goods & Ready to Wear. Levine’s was a type of junior department store that experienced growth from the late 30’s to through the 60’s, but is no longer common today. Sammy, & his wife, Annie had four sons, Irving, Harry, David & Archie. They resided at 5 Depot Street ( Ontario Street ), just a stones throw from the store. Sammy not only worked extremely long hours to ensure the success of the family business, the boys were expected to do the same. In 1947, Sammy announced plans for a 32’x 38’ addition, with a 7 foot deep basement that would be constructed to provide additional room to display goods and allow new merchandise lines. Folks from Grimsby and surrounding area will remember the remodelled store ....shopping on two floors, display models throughout, fully dressed windows complete with mannequins ( thanks to the talented Harry )! A modern store for local families! Not only did Levine’s offer fine clothing, they also sold shoes, ( advertising Bata, Savage, Dacks & Sisman ), camping equipment, boat trailers, marine hardware & paint! By 1958, Levine’s introduced a new Budget Plan! You could purchase what you needed with this plan, with no money down! After many decades of hard work serving the needs of our small town, Sammy and Annie decided some leisure time was in order. They turned to store over to Archie and his wife, Blima who continued to serve the community for many years. Archie was known to all as a cheerful, friendly character in Grimsby.
