Grimsby Street SceneDescription
Patriotic postcard postmarked October 1906 with a small black and white image of people and wagon's on Grimsby village's Main street business section looking west towards Forty Mile creek. HG&B tracks and a streetcar are in the photo which dates the image to between 1894 and the early 1900's.
Photo has a golden border and is flanked by-
The Canadian Red Ensign and the Ontario Red Ensign on the right;
On the left, above a base of maple leaves, is a rare portrayal of nine quarterings of Arms for: Ontario, a device designed for (but never used by) the Yukon Territory, Quebec, Prince Edward Island, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Nova Scotia, British Columbia, and New Brunswick. Alberta did not use arms until 1907, sometime after the card was designed.
A shield of nine quarterings was impossibly complex as a national symbol, so an entirely new design for the Canadian coat of arms was considered. A new coat of arms was formally assigned to the Dominion of Canada by Royal Proclamation in 1921.
On the reverse, there is a note which includes a shoe drawing.Dimensions
