Lake View HouseDescription
Lake View House postcard postmarked 1910.
Built in 1883, the Lake View was located within the Methodist Camp Ground overlooking the lake from Lake View Avenue - what is today the north west side of Betts Avenue.
When built, it was considered one of finest and most complete summer hotels on the continent. Lake View House became the centre of the social life of Grimsby Park. Both the Lake View House and the Park House hotels were expertly managed by J.D Strawn of Buffalo. A stay at the Lake View House was $1.50 to $2 per night, slightly more than a stay at the Park House.
Both hotels had stable accommodation for those who arrived by horse-drawn vehicle. An advert states that the Lake View House was "...enlarged and re- furnished in order to meet the demand for increased accommodation" (Greetings From Grimsby Park pg.30).
Acquired by Canada Steamship Lines in 1913 as part of their purchase of Grimsby Beach Park, it was rennovated and reopened by CSL as the Grimsby Beach Inn. The facility was totally destroyed in a fire on July 1,1918 and CSL decided not to rebuild it.Collection
