"Mount Dorchester Cottage" originally built by Dennis Palmer - pre 1862. Palmer was Grimsby's top industrialist of the 1850s - 1870s. He founded the Grimsby foundry in the late 1840's, later taking on John Grout in 1856 to form the firm Palmer & Grout using Palmers patents for agricultural implements.
Palmer retired from the foundry and established Canada's first fruit cannery company Dennis Palmer & Co. . The firm was advertising an selling canned fruit and vegetables in Toronto in 1868. The cannery initially operated on this property on Main Street West but needing to expand, Palmer purchased land around 88 Main St West and built a cannery there. Operating by 1870 as the Grimsby Fruit Canning company, Dennis Palmer was President of the firm until Jan. 1878 when he sold the cannery to Beverley Nelles.
169 Main Street West. The Belvedere structure on the roof was designed to take advantage of the elevated views.
