c. 1895, Peter Schaaf (1854 - 1926) took title to land on the northeast corner of 11th and Ash Streets in Erie and built a brick store building. The second floor became the home of Peter and his wife, Ida. In 1923, Peter acquired real estate in Harborcreek on McCormick Road, now Ridge Parkway, running between Saltsman and Hannon Roads. He built a cannery building on this property with two large outdoor wooden vats, each open at the top, 8 ft. deep, and 10 ft. diameter. The vats were used to make sauerkraut. In addition to kraut, lima beans, corn meal mush, and gasoline were also canned and sold in the store in Erie. These items were marketed under the brand name "Harbor Creek," and a signature crow logo. The family closed the grocery store in Erie in 1928, two yeas after Peter's death. Ida held a public sale to divest of the furnishings, fixtures, and equipment from both the Erie store and the Harborcreek cannery.
