Constructed ca. 1848; facade and interior remodeled ca. 1870-71. Thomas Abrahams and John Seyle, architects; George W. Egan, contractor. Claudian Northrop, a prominent antebellum attorney, Confederate soldier, and later a leading Catholic priest, built this 2-story masonry commercial structure shortly after acquiring the property. After the Civil War the South Carolina Loan and Trust remodeled it as their headquarters with the addition of the fashionable cast-iron Italianate detailing to the new facade. An arched loggia with Corinthian columns ornaments the entry, while arched windows and a curvilinear gable accent the upper portion of the building. On the interior, the former banking room retains its cove ceiling with central plaster medallion and notable dentiled cornice. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)
