Description

Two color photographs of 16 Council Street, showing the front (west) elevation at slightly different orientations. Location map drawn on back of each photograph. Freedman's cottage constructed ca. 1886 by H.L. Graddick, an African American mariner, and/or his son, H.T. Graddick, captain of the schooner Robert E. Lee, who also built 10 Council Street. More diminutive than its neighbor 14 Council, this cottage retains its simple two-bay front facade with closed gable, despite numerous additions to the rear. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)
