ELIZABETH.019.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1831. Bulwinkle's grocery store actually follows the traditional pattern of the Charleston single house with 1st-story concessions to commercial use. Original entry doors on both the Elizabeth Street and Charlotte Street elevations provided access to the shop, while a masked piazza included an early staircase which provided access to the 2nd-floor porch and the accompanying dwelling unit. The Flemish bond brickwork and the dogtooth cornice at the gable end are modest architectural flourishes.
File contains photocopy of photo from Preservation Progress; newspaper articles (1952, 1970 DYKYC); handwritten staff research "source notes" (scant); correspondence from archivist to SC Historical Society to confirm address of building.Collection
