KING.023.1Scope and Content
Described in a book as one of the oldest wooden houses in Charleston, having been built in 1721 on land granted to John Stevens in 1682; another source estimates that the house was built in 1755. According to the Buildings of Charleston entry for 16-24 King Street, Its balcony and its likeness across the street at 24 King Street were removed from the facade of 56-58 Broad Street.
File contains two captioned photographs from the News & Courier, presumably from the same article (DYKYC); graduate student report (Alison Dunleavy, 2013) on the history of the house, which includes historical and chain-of-title research, maps, photos, and other supporting documentation; letter from Susan Pringle Frost to Zoning Commission about proposed alterations (1/8/1935).
