Scope and Content

Constructed 1887. Eggert Heinsohn's Grocery and residence is a good example of a late 19th century mixed-use corner building that conforms to Charleston's traditional architectural design and siting. A two-story frame building on the southwest corner of Broad and Legare Streets; a late-19th century replacement for an earlier house burned in the fire of 1861. Clad in novelty siding, the building has a front-gable roof with standing-seam metal roofing, a 2-tier piazza along the west elevation, storefront windows on both streets, and a narrow rear wing with a separate piazza. Three files contain documentation of the easement on the property; Part I certification (National Register); easement appraisal report and IRS form 8283; historical research and supporting documentation prepared by Sarah Fick in preparation for Part I certification application (includes source list, 1868 real estate notice, 1886 and 1965 plats, Sanborn maps, SC Architectural Inventory sheet); Hurricane Hugo damage assessment survey (pdf) See Easement Documentation Photo Files for easement donation photographs (Exh.
