Site of the signing of the Ordinance of Secession in 1860. The building and its neighbors were destroyed. No building history on file. Needs further research. File contains newspaper articles about proposed demolition and construction at 134 Meeting, and DYKYC about the signing of the Ordinance of Secession (with illustration of Institute Hall and nearby buildings); illustration (from magazine) of Institute Hall and plaque that hangs at building's location; photocopy of photo from "Resources & Attractions of Charleston" (ca. 1898); photocopies of two early photos of Institute Hall and neighboring buildings (sources not indicated).

Note

Notes: 12/17/2010: Historical marker recently installed. Identifies the site were the Grand Hall stood, Charleston's largest pre-Civil War public space, seated 3,000 and hosted fairs, exhibits, concerts, balls, and conventions. It hosted the 1860 Democratic convention, which split over the mention of slavery in the party platform. December 20, 2010 marks the sesquicentennial (150th) anniversary of the drafting and signing of the Ordinance of Secession at Institute Hall.
