Scope and Content

Constructed ca. 1830; rehabilitated 1971. The daughter of George Gibbs, who also owned 12 Montagu Street, built this 3-story Charleston single house shortly after 1830. Although the house contains some holdovers from the Federal period, such as the nine-over-nine windows and the attenuated Tuscan columns of the piazza, the remnant of the original piazza door screen and the parapeted termination and flat roof relate the building to the emerging Greek Revival style. The latter two features may reflect alterations to the house completed after sale of the property in 1848 by Caroline Blackwood and her new husband, George W. Brown, to Thomas E. Baker, or after Baker's sale to the stockbroker Isaac Moise in 1851. This house, like many others in the neighborhood, was rehabilitated in the 1970s by George A. Z. Johnson. File contains handwritten staff research "source notes" (scant).
