PITT.001.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1848. Basile Lanneau, a tanner and currier, acquired these lots in the easternmost section of Harleston Village in 1788. The Lanneaus, French Catholic* settlers from Acadia, arrived in South Carolina with other exiles in 1755. Basile was befriended by the wealthy merchant Henry Laurens, converted to Protestantism, and thrived as a craftsman and businessman. A number of houses in this area of Pitt Street were constructed by members of the Lanneau family. Charles Henry Lanneau built this house by 1848, after which he conveyed it to William D. Porter, who supposedly allowed the house to be used as a prison for Federal soldiers during the Civil War. Acquired by William Baynard Simons in 1889, the house was held by his family until the end of the 1930s. Built of local brick, the Charles Henry Lanneau House follows the side-hall, double- parlor plan, with a rear addition for a dining room. Rubbed brick jack arches, a brick belt course between floors, and a dogtoothed cornice ornament the front facade. The flat-roofed dwelling has a two-tiered piazza facing Beaufain Street, accessed by triple sashed windows from the double parlors and rear dining room. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)
File contains FOHG house history (2008); newspaper article (1970 DYKYC); photocopies of photographs of various elevations and details (2005); email from Lanneau descendant correcting religious information about the Lanneau family.*
*The Lanneaus were Protestant Huguenots, not Catholics (Lanneau descendant email).Collection
