KING.016-24.1Scope and Content
Constructed in the 19th century; variously altered 20th century. This interesting collection of single houses reflects a typical 19th century Charleston streetscape. While some of the structures date from the early-19th century, the John Laurens North House (24 King Street) predates the 1820s. Some late-19th century alterations, such as the mansard roof on 22 King Street, reflect changes over time. Even the wrought-iron balconies that adorn the facade of 24 King Street provide insight to the evolutionary changes of a streetscape. Although their craftsmanship might date them to the construction of the house, this balcony and its likeness across the street on the mid-18th century dwelling at 23 King Street were moved here from the facade of 56-58 Broad Street.
File contains Rosen and Associates (engineers) inspection report of 16 King Street (2005); realtor sales listing (with brief history and photograph) for 22 King Street (2010); FOH House history (undated) for 24 King Street (The John Laurens North House).Collection
