KING.193.1Description
B&W photograph of the William Bell Building (193 King Street), east (front) elevation.
The William building was constructed before 1840 and is an excellent example of early 19th century mixed commercial and residential King Street architecture. This relatively unaltered street facade is very typical of the facades which ranged up and down King Street in the 19th century. Notable about the facade is the quality of brickwork, the brownstone lintels and the cast iron attic grilles, are common elements in the facades of mid-19th commercial and residential facades. Like many King Street properties, the commercial space of 193 King was altered in the late 19th century. It was then that the single house floor plan was lost from the first floor and the two iron columns were inserted to expand the sales space on the first floor. The central stairhall was not removed from the second to third floors where the single house plan survives. (Vernacular Architecture of Charleston and the Lowcountry.)
