Constructed 1923; new wing 1968. Designed by Charleston architect John D. Newcomer. A 2½ story building with a front-gable roof, three-bay facade, and two lateral wings with hipped roofs. Gabled dormers are set at the slopes of the wings. two-tier screened porches extend along the east and west sides of the rear section. The Florence Crittenton Home is long associated with the development of social and child welfare programs in Charleston and for caring for the needs of unmarried mothers and their babies.
File contains National Register Preliminary Information form; National Register Registration Form; newsletter about Hurricane Hugo damage; newspaper article (1997); two histories of the Florence Crittenton Home (both undated, unattributed); photocopies of 1928 photograph and late 20th century photograph; photocopy of photo of Charles n. Crittenton.
