TRADD.013.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1778-82; altered ca. 1860. A rich Charleston merchant with extensive English connections built this 3-story brick house as an investment, probably after the fire of 1778 to replace a previous dwelling owned by the Hopton family. William Hopton's daughter Sarah carried the property to her marriage with Nathaniel Russell. Combined with Russell family properties on Longitude Lane, the site did not pass out of the family until Sarah Russell Dehon's death in 1859, and various plats exhibit altered property lines. Although retaining its basic window fenestration and Flemish-bond brick over English bond (visible on the west facade), the Hopton tenement was altered in the 19th century with a flat roof and in the 20th with a double first-floor window, Colonial Revival style pedimented entry architrave, and Greek Revival style cornice. Nineteenth-century changes similarly characterize the 2-story, Charles Warham House at 17 Tradd Street, also missing its pre-Revolutionary roofline and boasting a finely articulated parapet, along with a 20th-century doorway and second-floor semicircular balcony. Between the two dwellings and down a gated walkway, a brick building, formerly a kitchen, provides an interesting vista; Henry Saltus's 2-story kitchen with pantile roof may have survived the fire of 1778. An early-20th century owner renovated it, with substantial additions, as a residence.
