THOMAS.015.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1840. Samuel Sage Mills, a native of Massachusetts, bought a substantial corner property including this site and 177 feet along Warren Street in 1839. Mills constructed this building while his brother-in-law, Lawrence A. Edmonston, erected a similar dwelling on the western portion of the property at 86 Warren Street. A single Ionic pilaster survives at the southeast corner of the Mills dwelling, but its match at the northeast corner was removed many years ago. A subsequent owner also removed the Ionic-columned portico on the south elevation. Architectural historians have generally noted that the external appearance of the building, with its pilasters, dentiled cornice, and Greek Revival recessed doorway, and its internal plan, without a central stair hall, resembles New England style houses of the period.
