Scope and Content

Constructed 1912. The large-scale Dingle House provides a strong corner at the wide intersection of Tradd Street and Ashley Avenue. John and Olive O. Dingle purchased this lot in 1910 and by virtue of the west-end improvements filling program of 1911, they were able to develop the site by 1913. Dingle, then Charleston's City Engineer, constructed a 2½ story Colonial Revival Style house with a front Doric columned porch, paired second-story central windows, and a slate gable roof with three pedimented dormers. Grace Goodhue Coolidge, wife of President Calvin Coolidge, stayed in this house during her visit to Charleston in the 1920s. Shortly after completion of the Dingle House, John Reeves built a smaller-scaled Colonial Revival house at 180 Tradd Street, similar to its neighbor but with Craftsman overtones including a central diamond-paned window flanked by unusual oval windows on the second floor. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.) File contains FOHG house history (1994); historical/chain-of-title research and photocopies of deeds (Levkoff, 1994).
