10 Water Street (Swain-Hussey House)Entry/Object ID
WATER.010.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1800. The entrance into 10 Water Street was originally on the garden side of the house, opposite its current location, as the lot that the mariner Luke Swain acquired stretched to Stoll's Alley on the north and to Church Street on the west. The house faced the alley currently behind the house and had piazzas overlooking Vanderhorst Creek, which soon thereafter became Water Street. Swain lived on the alley and sold the property, with or without a dwelling, to another mariner, George Hussey, in 1800. By the time of an 1826 plat, the building had assumed its present form including its front piazza, hipped roof, and other features. Of particular note, two doors with twin Neoclassical architraves provide separate entries to the front rooms, a characteristic of some Cooper River Plantation houses but unknown in the city. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)
File contains FOHG house histories (undated, 1993); historical research (Harlan Greene?, undated); photocopies of 1826 plat and 1943 plat.Collection
