Scope and Content

Constructed ca. 1830. Robert Hopton acquired this lot in 1821, a site formerly owned by John Burckmeyer, who built the house next door at 124 Wentworth Street. The 3-story, plantation-style version of the Charleston single house faces the street with a double-tiered piazza and two central doorways on the first two floors with rectilinear transoms and sidelights. The wooden picket fence standing on a masonry coping is a rare form of this type of enclosure, once common in the neighborhood. After passing through several owners, the house became the property of H.W. Muckenfuss. W. Murragh Muckenfuss, an attorney on Broad Street, lived here for much of the late-19th century. Three files contain documentation of the easement on the property including related correspondence and confirmation of understanding; Part I certification (National Register); IRS form 8283; annual inspection reports; requests for alterations; roperty; house history from Information for Guides of Historic Charleston (1984); house history from Tour Guide Training Manual (2011); handwritten staff chain-of-title research "source notes" (scant); data sheet for CharlestonWISE Impact Project (Sustainability Institute) that includes construction date, square footage, number of stories, building orientation, system materials/types, Sanborn Map research notes, and additions/alterations notes (Mariah Schwartz, 2011). See Easement Documentation Photo Files for easement donation photographs (Exh. B to Deed of Conservation Easement). No inspection photographs on file (see Easement Manager's digital inspection photographs).
