ATLANTIC.000.1Scope and Content
0 Atlantic Street is an 1850s building that was constructed as the carriage house for the Porcher-Simonds house at 29 East Battery, and was later converted into a separate residence. It retains many original features that speak to its original use. The three-story masonry building with a stucco façade is recessed from the street and has a large front garden. It is adjoined with 29 East Battery, giving evidence to the fact that it began as an outbuilding for the harbor-facing residence. The first floor features several former carriage and horse entrances. The front facade is divided into two larger bays by a narrow set of window openings on each story. The central window on the second floor provides a focal point with its oval shape and decorative keystone features around it. Sometime before the 1930s, the Simonds family added a third story, which features a small balcony with gallery doors. A corbelled fireplace flue on the Atlantic Street facade shows the intersection between second and third floor from the addition, and an exterior belt course at the intersection between the stories shows the previous height.
