Old Iron and Trivet Collection- made of cast iron
2025.10.1.1- SAD Iron- the pictured iron with a wooden,
detachable iron is a SAD iron. This iron
was made by the Howell Company of
Geneva, IL. It was called a “sad” iron
because of its weight… possibly 5-10 lbs.
causing the user to work hard! The handle
detaches so that it can be attached to
other weights for ironing as needed. It
belonged to the donor’s grandmother,
Angelina Nicastro.
2025.10.1.2- SAD iron without handle
2025.10.1.3- Flat iron and Trivet-dates from Victorian
period and was heated and used to iron
clothes. The trivet was made in
Philadelphia by the Enterprise Mtg.
