Objects such as these are called 'clackers'. Many, like this one is handmade and used for various purposes. Being wooden, they are light weight, but very loud when swung back and forth. Clackers quickly get the attention of anyone in the area. Other than noisemakers, they were used in the late 1800's and early 1900's to awaken sleeping patrons or household members in hotels, boarding houses and homes to warn inhabitants of fire or gas leaks in the buildings. Fires were extremely common in these early days and many buildings in Hammonton fell victims to flames. Even soldiers in WWI and WWII were known to use clackers to warn of impending attack. 9 3/4” x 11.5”. Cracked where stricker hits.
