Photo of the Cedars Restaurant-
The Cedars" Hotel, Restaurant and Bar located at the corner near Rt 30 (WHP) and Rt. 206 was owned and operated by Thomas Penza, Sr. and my brother Angelo Penza, along with their wives “Elizabeth and “”Mary” who were also sisters. From the late 1930s to around 1950s the two brothers also partnered and built a service station right next door on the corner of Rt. 30 and Middle Road. The Cedars was a convenient stopping place for travelers coming through Hammonton on their way from the South Jersey Shore.I do not know who the original owners of the property were prior to the Penza’s owning it. The Alessandrini Family later owned and operated it under the name “The Hacienda”. Some time in the late 1970’s into the 1980’s the State of NJ operated some kind of public assistance office out of it. After that, it became a vacant run down until its demolition around 1990. In 2001, current Walgreens was constructed on the entire property where it and the Penza service station once stood.
