This is a vintage Patriotic Order Sons of America (P.O.S. of A.) ribbon medal, specifically for Washington Camp No. 73 based in Hammonton, NJ. Pictured is an interesting piece of Americana memorabilia. The colorful and intricately detailed ribbon once belonged to a member of the POS, which stands for the ‘Patriotic Order Sons’ of America from Washington Camp No. 73 in Hammonton, New Jersey. The predominate colors on the front of the ribbon are a red, white and blue stripe that features a prominent central medallion with George Washington kneeling in prayer at Valley Forge. The medallion is surrounded by a gold brass guilting with 2 ribbon flags crossed and flying above the medallion. The ribbon is held by a pin clasp with additional flags and gold trim. The embroidered lettering on the ribbon is also gold colored as is the fringe on the bottom border. The back side of the ribbon is black with a white emblem that states “In Memorium” and repeats POS in A and Hammonton Camp #73. Who were the POS of A? The fraternal organization was founded in 1847 and had over 20 “camps” or chapters in the U.S., predominately Pennsylvania. They aggressively
represented the ‘anti-alien’ native born Americans. The anti-alien riots of the 1840s, were also known as the Philadelphia Nativist Riots or the Bible Riots, and were a series of violent clashes between native-born Protestants and Irish Catholic immigrants.Acquisition
